Deborah is the Director of Tax Controversy Services at Windham Brannon. Her ability to delve into and sort out excessive data, coupled with her strong interpersonal skills, make her the first choice for clients dealing with forensic accounting issues, IRS and state audits, penalty abatement, payment arrangements, and other controversy matters. In addition, she has experience in corporate and partnership returns, including multi-state returns, individual tax returns, property tax returns, and not-for-profit returns.

Deborah really enjoys working with not-for-profit organizations, an interest which began when she volunteered to be Treasurer for her local PTA some 15 years ago. She plays an important role in the firm’s Form 990 tax preparation practice. She provides consulting services for not-for-profits relating to daily operational matters such as unrelated business taxable income, state filing requirements, receipting charitable donations, and fundraising activities. She specializes in preparing applications for tax-exempt status and for obtaining reinstatement for charities whose tax-exempt status has been revoked.

Prior to joining the firm, Deborah was a tax manager at Tarpley & Underwood, an accounting firm that merged with Windham Brannon in 2011. She joined T & U in January 2000 after working 25 years for Southern Company Services, Inc., an organization that provides specialized technical and professional services to electric and gas utilities owned by the Southern Company. Deborah held the position of executive assistant to the chairman of the board of the Southern Company during her first nine years with the company. After receiving a BBA in Accounting from Georgia State University and completing her CPA exam, she transferred to the tax department to begin her career as a CPA.

Deborah is passionate about Girl Scouting and was awarded the Helen Foster Award of Excellence by Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. She has been a Girl Scout volunteer for over 11 years serving as a troop leader, service unit director, and director of a summer day camp.
